What The Hell Is THAT?!

A Collection of Modern Non-Objective and Abstract Art Works
by Paula Boss

What the hell is that???! Is a question that I’m sure runs through many peoples minds when looking at non-objective and abstract art. Is it suppose to mean something…be something…what is abstract art anyways…non-objective art?

This is how I explain it:  abstract art = “reality messed with” and non-objective art = “making something out of nothing”.

Now if you want an explanation of it by a really smart guy… this is what Ronald H. Silverman, Ed.D.,Professor Emeritus of Art, California State University, Los Angeles wrote on his website, “Learning About Art”. He defines non-objective as, “a type of art that evokes responses to surface qualities which do not allude, in any way, to recognizable objects or events (the opposite of naturalism).” and abstraction as, “a device in art which alters or simplifies reality (nature) to facilitate the expressive purposes of the artist.” (1)  I like the way he explains it….smart guy!

As an abstract and non-objective artist it’s interesting where the inspiration for a painting can come from. A casual glance at a bird in the sunshine…tire tracks in the snow…a dream…a feeling…a mistake…a terrific orgasm. That’s the thing and the fun of it for me…is that inspiration can come from anywhere. The inspiration leads ultimately into a work of art…a glimpse into how I see the world…a snapshot inside my mind.

I hope you enjoy what you see or feel when viewing my work.  I’ve done my part and now it is up to you to decide…What the HELL is that?!  She says with a different intonation in her voice , like an actor rehearsing his lines.

I Put Myself Out There And Something Wonderful Happened

It's hard to let yourself be vulnerable. Especially with something as personal as art. When an artist shares a work they create, they are opening up and exposing the heart and soul and mind. Let me put it to you this way. Have you ever had a dream, a bad sort of dream...
